Twist and Shout
was written by
Bert Russel
and Phil Medley. Originally the song was recorded by the "Topnotes"
and the "Isley Brothers". Later on the Beatles covered it,
with John Lennon as the lead singer. The Beatles published
the song on their first album "Please, please
me".
The recording sessions for this album were remarkable for the fact that it was their first album session and they only needed about 10 hours for 11 songs. Twist and Shout was the last song to record: Producer George Martin knew that John Lennon's voice would suffer from singing that song and therefore he held it back till the end when only 15 minutes of the estimated studio time were left.
At that time Lennon suffered from a cold. He drank milk and took cough drops to quone his throat. Despite all that he showed an incredible vocal performance. Later he said that his voice was unusable for a long time afterwards and that it felt like sandpaper each time he swallowed.
They have been taken two recordings of Twist and Shout. The first one they took for the album. George Martin said: "I tried to do a second take ... but John's voice was gone."
Twist and Shout was the only Beatles cover single that
sold millionfold, and the only one that reached the top 10 of all
international album charts. The Beatles also performed their
Twist and Shout in the legendary Ed Sullivan Show in
February of 1964.
