The Afro-American soul singer Ben E. King who was born 69
years ago and whose original name is
Benjamin Earl Nelson would never have dreamt of two things:
First that his already in 1961 famous song Stand by me would
enter the charts again 25 years later - as a title song of the
same-named movie. And second that there would ever be so many cover
versions of his song.
As Ben E. King stated he never intended to record the song himself, because he basically wrote it for The Drifters. But they didn't take the chance to record it. Stand by me so remained unpublished until one day he was done with his recording session on another project earlier than estimated. As he had some studio time left, the producer asked King if he had other songs, and so King played Stand by me for him. The producer was enthusiastic about it and called the studio musicians in again to record the song. Who knows, if Ben E. King wouldn't have ended his project earlier, perhaps Stand by me never would have got recorded. The song did not get published on an album until it had already been played as a single for two years.
Ben E. King's version was a top-ten hit in the US even two times: In 1961 as the original version and in 1968 when the song came out as the theme for the same-named movie as well as in the Levis Jeans commercial. It reached number 8 in the United World Charts. Stand by me is number 121 in the Rolling Stone's List of the 500 greatest songs of all times. In 1999 BMI named it as the fourth most-performed song of the 20th century, with about 7 million performances.
Stand by me got covered countless times, among others in 1975 by John Lennon, after they named themselves "The Beatles", and in 1998 as a rap version by the group 4the Cause. That one we took as pattern for our own version.
