The singer and songwriter Bill Withers was born on the 4 July
1938, at Slafork, West Virginia, US. He is known for his timeless
anthems that float in warm tones. The afterworld appreciates his
compositions very much as the amount of cover versions is hardly
assessable. Ain't no sunshine e.g. had been recorded in over
350 versions.
Bill Withers discovered his love for music rather late in his life. He had spent his childhood in narrow circumstances in a small village at West Virginia. At the age of 13 he had to experience the death of his father. With 17 he joined the Marines, serving for nine years before he parted with the Navy and moved to Los Angeles.
Just there he found his talent for singing and writing and he used it for expressing his emotions. He recorded his ideas on demo bands at the end of the 60ies. It took quite a long time until a record company showed some interest and granted him his debut album which promptly earned euphoric criticism. His first success he had in 1971 with his hit Ain't no sunshine from the Album "Just as I am", published by Sussex Records.
"Ain't no sunshine" was covered by many artist including Al Green, Van Morrison, Tom Jones, Joe Cocker, Justin Timberlake & Robyn Troup, Ziggy Marley, Lighthouse Family, Ben Harper, Sting, Lenny Kravitz, Soul For Real, Eva Cassidy, Al Jarreau, D'Angelo, Michael Jackson, Will Young, ...
This song is number 280 of the Rolling Stone's List of the 500 Greatest Songs of all times. Among others it had a successful performance in the hit movie Notting Hill in the version of the "Lighthouse Family". No wonder, for songs like Ain't No Sunshine prove that music can consist of simple ideas and nevertheless can stand the test of time.
