Creedence Clearwater Revival
, aka CCR, was a Californian Rock band of the late 60ies and early 70ies. After their names originally had been The Blue Velvets and later The Golliwogs they re-named themselves Creedence Clearwater Revival in December 1967. This name was a mix of the name of a friend (Credence) and the beer brand "Clearwater" which stood for purity.

But Clearwater also stood for the band's mindset regarding environment protection and drugs. John Fogerty considered the belief that drugs would increase creativity not only a wrong but also an incredibly sad one. "Revival" finally symbolized the band's solidarity.

With their album "Bayou Country", published in 1969, the band came to the style they kept up over the following years. Their music was titled Bayou- or Swamp-Rock as the subjects of their lyrics dealt with rural wisdoms again and again.

Finally people thought that CCR must come from Louisiana. This myth mainly emerged because of singer John Fogerty's love for the South-US. His favourite music - blues and classic rock and roll - came from there. Their second hit single tells about a Mississippi paddlesteamer named Proud Mary which intensified this assumption.

Proud Mary was written by the American singer and guitarist John Fogerty. In 1969 the title was recorded by CCR on their album "Bayou Country" and is seen as their "brand" song since.

It shows elements of various genres including Rock and Roll, Blues, Gospel and Soul. Nevertheless the song includes the typical CCR characteristics like repeated guitar riffs, enthnic lyrics and a guitar solo.

The second line of the second verse caused some confusion: People understood "pumped a lot of pain " and "pumped a lot of 'pane" which refers to propaine and is also a word for gas/fuel. Additionally this controversy got "fuelled" by Ike & Tina Turner's cover version that says "pumped a lot of 'tane" which in turn refers to octane.

The autor of the lyrics, John Fogerty finished the discussion off by saying: "Sometimes I write words to songs because they sound cool to sing. Sometimes the listener doesn't understand what I'm singing because I'm dedicated to singing the vowel, having fun with the word sounds coming out of my mouth. 'Cleaned a lot of plates in Memphis, pumped a lot of pain down in New Orleans,' is a good example. I think Tina Turner sang '`tane' instead of 'pain,' as in a contracted form of 'octane'. But I knew what she meant."

Of course, this song got covered many times, the most famous version is the one of Ike & Tina Turner. A totally new arrangement of Soko Richardson and Ike Turner, with a sultry, slow opening and spoken-word intro, it reached #4 on the pop charts in 1971.

Elvis Presley also had performed Proud Mary in his Las Vegas shows and on his tours in the early 70ies. And in 2005 Beyoncé sang and danced Tina Turner's version of Proud Mary at the "Kennedy Center Honors" (a conferment of honors to performing arts artists) to the honor of Tina Turner who got honored for her life's work.
