Wild World was written and recorded by Cat Stevens. It was
the most famous single of his album "Tea for the
Tillerman" which was published in 1970. In this song he
addresses his lover who is leaving him. Although this separation hurts
him a lot he accepts her decision and wishes her all the best.
Nevertheless he feels the need to warn her that life wouldn't be that
easy without him.
Many artists covered this song, including James Blunt at the occasion of the Live Earth Concerts in Juli 2007 in London. Live Earth was a monumental music event that brought together more than 2 billion people to speak out against the global climatic disaster. 24 hours of music over 7 continents should be a call to necessary solutions and actions. That event marked the beginning of a three-year campaign which is led by the "Alliance for Climate Protection" to bring individuals, companies and governments to take measures. Of course, also Yusuf Islam, as Cat Stevens is called today, took part in the concert with his Wild World.
Steven Demetre Georgiou, that's his right name, was born in London, as the son of a Greek Cypriot and a Swedish woman. He wrote his first songs at the end of the 60ies and toured around with so-so success.
In 1968, when he was 20 years old, he fell sick with tuberculosis and had to go to hospital for a longer period. After a successful comeback in the early 70ies he became an international star and sold 41 million albums till 1977.
In 1975 he nearly died at Malibu, and he considered it a dispensation that a wave brought him ashore again. On Dec 30 1977 he bid adieu to his alias Cat Stevens. His brother had given him a Quran that totally changed his life.
After converting to Islam in Dec 1977 he changed his name into Yusuf Islam on 4 Jul 1978, and in 1979 he stopped making music in a wider scope. Only 1995 he again started to make music in a smaller scope, he performed and produced again.
Besides many other awards Yusuf Islam got presented the German Echo Award for his life's work in 2007. He also got honored as an "Ambassador between Cultures". It's very interesting that Yusuf Islam nonetheless was on the US Government Watchlist and wasn't allowed to enter but sent back to the UK. While the British Foreign Office intervened at the United Nations, Yusuf Islam guessed that his name was mixed up in context to the potential terrorists of 9/11 2002.
After the British "Sun" and "Sunday Times" first welcomed the deportation of Yusuf Islam, they afterwards had to write in their counter statement that Yusuf Islam had clearly pronounced against the 9/11 attacks shortly after the disaster and also had already received many awards for his humanitary commitments.
Yusuf Islam just commented: "It seems to be the easiest thing in the world these days to make scurrilous accusations against Muslims, and in my case it directly impacts on my relief work and damages my reputation as an artist. The harm done is often difficult to repair"
Yusuf Islam wrote about his relevant experiences in a newspaper article, titled with "A Cat in a Wild World".
