Deep
Purple is a british Rock band, founded in April 1968. It is one
of the first and most influencing representatives of Hard Rock,
especially because of their Hammond (Organ)-sound, their remarkable
guitar riffs and guitar solos, as well as their solid rhythms.
Smoke on
the Water, Black Night, Woman from
Tokyo,
Child in
Time, Highway Star and Hush are
their most known songs. In total they sold over 100 millions albums
worldwide.
In the year 1967 two London business men decided to invest in a Rock band. They charged Jon Lord with the formation of a Rock band - in 1968 Deep Purple was born. In 1968 their debut album "Shades of Deep Purple" offered a mix of various musical approaches that didn't show much relatedness with the typical Deep Purple music of the 70ies yet.
The album was recorded within only three days. The sound still was orientated by the Pop-music sound of the Beatles but yet quite unusual because of its harshness. That's why critics consider it the fundament of the Hard Rock and the later Heavy Metal development. On 6 June 1968 the band performed in Britain for their first time, as the opening act of the Byrds.
It is definitely no gap in education but yet quite interesting to know how Deep Purple's Smoke on the water came up in 1971:
In those days there actually was smoke on the water, namely on the waters of Lake Geneva. Deep Purple had gone to Montreux (Switzerland) to record their new album titled "Machine Head". For that reason they had rented a mobile studio truck, the actual recordings should have be taken in the Montreux Casino.
The background for this unusual type of recording studio (the Casino) was that the band didn't want the sterile, dry sound of a typical studio but the reverberating sound of a concert stage. They wanted a studio album with the sound of a live-concert, just without the audience.
The Montreux Casino offered all that. The truck already was parked in front of the house. But they couldn't start with building up their equipment yet, as Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention still were performing inside.
Then, during the concert, suddenly fire broke out. The concert had to be stopped and the Casino got evacuated. Nobody knows exactly what had caused the fire. Deep Purple are singing about some idiot with a flare gun, but it can also not be excluded that it was an electric defect.
Fact is that the Casino with Frank Zappa's entire equipment bruned down to the ground. So Deep Purple had to look for another place where they could record their album. They found that place in the Grand Hotel which was empty in winter. With mattresses ("a few old beds") they coverted it into a studio. After three weeks of intensive work (in December 1971) Deep Purple finished their recording sessions and left Montreux.
With Smoke on the water there remained one of the most memorable and legendary guitar riffs of the Rock music. Just about that riff Richie Blackmore wondered: "How could such a riff become a world hit?". But it did!
