Eric Clapton, born in 1945, is a british guitarist, singer,
songwriter and composer. He is one of the most successful musicians
of the 20th and 21st century who had won a Grammy and had
entered the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times (with the bands "The Yardbirds"
and "Cream" and as a solo artist). He is ranked number 4 on the
Rolling Stone's List "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" and
number 53 on the
"100 Greatest Artists of All Time".
Although Eric Clapton's musical style often changed during his career he always was rooted in the Blues.
Eric Clapton was born to an unmarried 16 years old mother and a 24 years old soldier who went back to war before his birth. Clapton grew up with his grandmother Rose, assuming that she and her husband were his parents and that his mother was his older sister. When Eric was 9 years old he revealed the family secret which was a very memorable experience for him. Per his own statement he became a difficult and nasty child whithdrawing from his family. His questions regarding his roots he tried to digest in the song My Father's eyes.
With 13 Clapton was presented a Spanish acoustic guitar and a marimba (a percussion instrument of the xylophone family) for his birthday. But he had to realize that those instruments were difficult to learn what nearly made him give up. Influenced from the Blues in his very early days he practiced for hours and struggled with learning chords or with imitating the exact sounds of artists like Big Bill Broonzy which he had on his Grundig tape recorder.
After school Clapton graduated at Kingston College of Art. With 17 he joined his first band.
Eric Clapton wrote Wonderful tonight on his then love Pattie Boyd. It was published on the album "Slowhand" from 1977.
While this song usually is considered to be a romantic love song, the source of Wonderful tonight rather was a bit less than amourous poetry. Eric Clapton's inspiration came when he was waiting for his girl to finally get ready with dressing. Under this viewpoint "You look wonderful tonight" could be understood as an encouragement to hurry up, more than a loving compliment. However the following verses became a bit more patient and loving.
Also the instrumenation of the song is remarkable. Clapton's guitar is nearly free from distorsion. Whereas this is not completely untypical, his "clean" guitar marks Clapton's transition from the overdriven riffs that he himself helped to make popular.
Wonderful tonight tells about a couple visiting a party. Each of the three verses is one scene of this evening in which he mentions how wonderful she is, particularely when she brings him to bed after he had drunk a little too much.
