Falco was born in 1957 in Vienna. Sadly he died much too early
in February 1998 by a car accident in the Dominican Republic. His
real name was Johann "Hans" Hoelzl. He was an Austrian Pop-Rock
singer and rapper - basically the first European rapper, many times
he even was referred to as the first "white" rapper. His
mixture of Viennese accent, nasal High German, English, other
languages or simply just any sounds is quite unique. And since he
had such an impact on this kind of music, today there still is a
huge Falco fan community among American rappers.
In spring 1981 Falco's carreer started as a solo artist and he began cooperation with the Viennese producer Robert Ponger who already had a melody without lyrics. Originally it was written for another Austrian artist who denied to use it though. But Falco was enthusiastic about it and took it on board.
Within three days he wrote appropriate lyrics and recorded the title The Commissioner. At that time he wrote another song, Today's Heroes. Falco first wanted to publish that song as a single (with The Commissioner on the B-side). But after the first radio broadcast of The Commissioner - prior to the single's publication - there was such a tremendous listener's response like there was never before. Thus he and his record company submitted to the audience's taste and published a single with The Commissioner on the A-Side.
At the beginning of 1982 the official single The Commissioner got published in Austria. Shortly afterwards it reached number 1 of the Austrian Charts and also earned Falco Europe-wide top positions. Also overseas the single produced decent success: In Canada Falco received Gold, in the US the title ranked number 72. Falco was only the second artist who managed to enter the US charts with German lyrics. Even in Guatemala the song was number 1 of the charts. All together The Commissioner got sold about 7 million times, alone 750.000 copies in France. Hence this was the first commercial success of a white man's rap song.
Falco was the first German-speaking singer who got a song on the top of the US charts as the first and only German song down to the present day. Rock me Amadeus sold about 60 million sound carriers till this day.
In the 90ies our Dad had re-recorded The Commissioner with Falco, since the original tapes got lost with his producer. So he did with the songs Ganz Wien (Whole Vienna), Wiener Blut (Viennese Blood/Spirit which is named after the 1873 composed waltz by famous Johann Strauss II) and Junge Römer (Young Romans)!
The Commissioner was one of the first songs recorded with a
drum computer instead of real drums. That's why we performed the
song with playback too.
