Soul II
Soul was one of the most famous
and demanded British R & B-music groups of the late 80ies and early
90ies who won 2 Grammies. They came up in 1986 in London as a "sound
system" playing discs at House and street parties. The group
consisted of the mastermind
Jazzie B
and other (changing) musicians, notably including
Nellee Hooper
and
Caron Wheeler.
A "sound system" is understood as a
group of DJs and engineers contributing and
working together as one, often playing and producing one particular
kind of music (basically a mobile disco).
Jazzie B was the son of Westindian immigrants who had his first band with 14. The great break-through for Soul II Soul came with their third single Keep on movin', sung by Caron Wheeler. With that song they climbed up to number 5 of the national charts.
The album-version of Back to life was an a capella version based on a loop which got remixed and re-recorded before released as a single. Two new versions got produced - first, the original recording with instrumentation and second, a new edition with new lyrics and choir ("However do you want me" was attached to the title then). This second version was the most popular one. Back to life exceeded all expectations, ranked #1 in Britain and achieved top positions in all charts over the world.
Keep on movin' and Back to life, both from their debut-album "Club Classics Vol. 1" and with Caron Wheeler as the singer, had set a trend in in Britain's Dance music in the early 90ies.
