This song actually was chosen by Daddy and Michaela. To be honest,
when they first played it to us, we didn't like it that much. Each
one of us had a song or two that he didn't find so nice. But after a
while, and the oftener we listened to them, we liked our
not-favourite-songs better and better.
If you want to cover a song, and especially if you want to do that as true to the original as possible - like we did, you really have to study it in order to get all the details you want to imitate. You listen to it a 100 times, and even at the 101st time you'll discover something which "never has been there before!" *twinkle*
By that your friendship with a song grows because you learn to understand it better and better. You suddenly come to like a certain combination of instruments or a second voice or the whole choir. You "conquer" your instrument to achieve a certain sound. It partially is kind of puzzle work. But exactly that binds you together with the song.
As time went by we more and more liked Back to life. Our Dad again worked on a playback that matched the original extremely well. It was my first "soul-song" that I should sing. At the beginning I wasn't sure if I would manage that, since Caron Wheeler's target was yet extremely high. Especially singing "across" the lead-voice in the second part of the song (where Mona sings the 3rd verse) is very demanding. But I think that I was quite successful.
