Michelle
is a ballad by the
Beatles
that was published on their 6th studio album "Rubber Soul"
in 1965.
Lyrics and melody mainly were composed/written by Paul McCartney, namely in the 2/4 meter which was rather unusual for the Beatles.
To the song which mainly has a French text, McCartney got inspired by a student who was playing his guitar and singing a french song to it. He was so fascinated by the Parisian Bohemian scenery of the early 60ies that Paul McCartney started to work on his own such piece of music in September 1965. He asked a former classmate's wife who was a French teacher for help. It is said that she also had the idea to use the name Michelle. Despite the general belief McCartney did not write the song on or for a certain person.
The song was recorded in the usual line-up with John Lennon and George Harrison on the acoustic guitars, McCartney on the bass and Ringo Starr on the drums. Lennon and Harrison sang the background-voices. The guitar solos in the middle and at the end of the song have been written by Beatles-producer George Martin (per his own words).
Michelle is one of the most beautiful love songs and most broadcasted radio songs of the Beatles and got highly commended by the critics.
