U2 is an Irish Rock band which was founded in 1976 in Dublin.
One of their signature feature is that the line-up of the band
didn't change since their re-naming in 1978. The foursome is also
known for their charity engagement. They support
organizations like "Amnesty International" and "Greenpeace" and
stand up for acquittance, for fighting AIDS and extreme poverty in
3rd world nations. For that Bandleader Bono received the $
100.000 Philadelphia Liberty Medal in 2007.
The political, social and religious beliefs are very often subject of their songs. The lyrics are mostly poetic and profound. Songs like I still haven't found what I'm looking for, If God will send his angels and above all Yahweh proof that. In an interview Bono once said: "Should I have better written songs about sex and drugs? No, I just didn't want that."
Also their musical style became U2's signature feature. Again and again they slipped various styles in their music. Punk, Goslpel, Country, Blues and other trend elements characterize whole albums. They oriented themselves by artists like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Van Morrison, The Clash and many others but maintained a constant signature though.
Finally U2 developed a unique way of playing. Based on the rhythm section around drummer Larry Mullen Junior and bassist Adam Clayton the guitarist "The Edge" could cultivate a unique experimental guitar sound while singer Bono was the charismatic frontman of the band. Per his own words Aldam Clayton and Larry Mullen Junior are the backbone of the band, "The Edge" is the head and Bono the heart of the group.
U2-Songs are not necessarily "earworms", sometimes they are revealed to the listener only after a while. For many people the song One from their 7th studio album "Achtung Baby" is the best one. The cover-version which U2 recorded together with Mary J. Blidge, tells very expressively the feelings the song is dealing with.
